Prevent restricted-limb errors with clear, visible identification.
The G-SLEEVE® was designed by Gina M. Santosuosso, RN, BSN, to protect patients by preventing medical errors that may easily occur in any hospital or outpatient setting.
When taking blood pressure, administering an IV or taking blood draws when treating mastectomy, lumpectomy with lymph node removal and dialysis patients, it is highly advised “not to use the affected arm in fear of the risk of injury that may possibly lead to more severe conditions such as lymphedema.
After mistakenly using one patient’s affected arm, but not causing any harm to the patient, Nurse Santosuosso, found herself trying to solve the problem.
As Nurse Santosuosso and her fellow colleagues knew, it was sometimes difficult to remember which arm to administer blood pressure; IV’s and blood draws from. “We would document this in the patient’s chart numerous times, but these procedures are so common, they are sometimes done in the dark, the patient’s cannot always alert us because they may be sedated and there are usually just so many things going on at once that can easily cause the medical staff to forget, therefore compromising the patient’s safety…”
Gina Santosuosso, RN, BSN, designed the G-SLEEVE® to help protect patients and prevent common medical errors in hospitals and outpatient settings.
For patients who have had a mastectomy, lumpectomy with lymph node removal, or dialysis access, it is strongly recommended that blood pressure checks, IV’s, and blood draws not be performed on the affected arm. Nurses, staff, and patients are concerned about the risk of injury, which can lead to serious complications such as lymphedema or infection. Although we repeatedly document “NO BP, NO IV, NO BLOOD DRAWS” for the Right or Left arm in the patient’s chart and place signage on the bed, busy workflows and communication gaps can still lead to mistakes. Patients may also be unable to alert us if they are under anesthesia or cannot verbalize, further compromising their safety.
In the beginning of my nursing career, I saw this exciting opportunity to improve the current measures that were being used to protect these patients. Reminders that could help myself as well as fellow nurses, but more importantly decrease our patient’s anxiety level. As Dr. Ian Schaja once said so eloquently, “Safety Made Simple” became the idea here.
“We were constantly worried about forgetting…the patients were very nervous as well…Some of them were even writing “Don’t Use Arm” on their arms in lipstick!!!”
Nurse Santosuosso came up with the idea and originally designed the pink; cloth sleeve designed for mastectomy, lumpectomy with lymph node removal and dialysis patients…She then also included blue sleeves for men and brought them to work…
The G-SLEEVE® was created to be a bright unmistakable visual warning at the Point of Care. It has proven to be extremely effective in helping healthcare professionals protect vulnerable patients from preventable restricted-limb procedures compared to other methods. Charting alone, and plastic bracelets can be easily missed, not to mention the quantity and different colors already placed on the patient. They can be uncomfortable and become very overfamiliar.
The patients, doctors and nurses immediately loved it!!! The G-SLEEVE® was created!!!
